Nate Wraggs Character Design Class

I'm currently taking Nate Wragg's character design class and thought I would post my first 4 weeks of homework. Its seems like the theme of the class is starting with simple shapes that convey a character's personality and then adding details that echo that same shape language.

The first assignment was to design a monster starting from either a square, triangle, or circle.

We moved on to design crusaders. Mine is based on circular shapes.
We moved on to a character line-up to work on contrast in characters shapes and personalities.

This week we were just focusing on head shapes. I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to really work this out but I do feel as if each has their own personality.

Long John Silver Fish Graders

These illustrations were for a series of 10, 30 second commercials to promote Long John Silvers on the Game Show Network. I'll post one of the final commercials after it airs this Sunday.

I started by doing some sketches to figure out how cartoony or realistic the client wanted to go.

These are the final character designs.

This is the layout for the front of the school.

Then I did simple storyboards for each one to determine the best way to stage each gag.
